How to Pray Effectively

Updated: Nov 1

 WHAT IS PRAYER?

·         Prayer is a way for humans to give God the legal right and permission to interfere in our circumstances and the earth’s circumstances.

·         Prayer allows humans to exercise their legal authority on earth to bring God’s influence and power on planet earth.

Why do I say permission and legal right?

In Genesis 1:26-27 it says: “Then God said, ‘Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.’ So God created humans being in His own image. In the image of God, He created them; male and female he created them.  Then God blessed them and said ‘Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it.’

God’s original design was for humans (male and female) to govern the earth together.

The Bible says in Psalm 24:1:“The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it.” In Psalms 115:16-18, it states “The heavens belong to the Lord, but he has given the earth to all humanity.”  Heaven, the world, and all its people belong to Him, but the earth is our responsibility. We are to be stewards: a person whose job is to manage the land or property of another. In this case, managing God’s property, His earth, on His behalf.

We are accountable for the earth and each other. God also left us His manual, the Bible for how to function on His earth.  In it, we find instructions, His love letters to us, and how to have a relationship with Him. He has given us every solution to every problem on the earth, but He loves to be included in everything that we do. God wants to partner with us as one body.

When people say if there is a God why is there such poverty, wars, sickness or pollution in the world? Why isn’t God doing anything about it?  God says, “What are you doing about it?   You are responsible and accountable for the earth and each other!”

Now we know that Satan took that authority in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit, but Jesus took it back by the finished work of the cross and gave it back to us, all His disciples. Many scriptures speak of the authority we now have in Jesus against the enemy.

 Matthew 16:19 it states:

I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.”

Luke 10:19Amplified Bible (AMP)

Listen carefully: I have given you authority [that you now possess] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and [the ability to exercise authority] over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will [in any way] harm you.

Matthew 28:18

“All authority is given unto me in heaven and in earth”

Colossians 1:15-18 Amplified Bible (AMP)

He is also the head [the life-source and leader] of the body, the church;

1 Corinthians 12:27Amplified Bible (AMP)

Now you [collectively] are Christ’s body, and individually [you are] members of it [each with his own special purpose and function].

Psalm 8:4-6

What are mere mortals that you should think about them, humans beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowed them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority.

We must have the revelation that Jesus shares His authority with His bride the Church. The same authority Jesus had on the earth, we have because we are one body.

Therefore, what does praying with authority look like?

In Job 22:28, it says “Decree a thing it shall be established”

What does decree mean? The dictionary says decree is an official order given by person with power or by government. Which government do we go by?  The kingdom of God.  We don’t give orders to God we give orders to our circumstances to change and align itself with His laws. When we have revelation of that authority and APPLY it, we are then backed up by God’s power.

What should we be decreeing? Answer:  God Words over your life, your family, your job, anything.

Why decree God’s Words:

Is eternal in heaven – Mat 24:35

Will not return void – Is 55:11 - it will do what it says

praying the will of God – Heb 11:3 - you never have to say well if it’s God’s will.

Dispatches angels – Ps 103:20

Brings light into darkness – Ps 119: 130

Secures blessings – Ephesians 1;3;2, Peter 1:3

Is a seed – Mark 4

Is our weapon of warfare – Eph 6:10-20, 2 Cor 10:3-5

Pulls down mindset – 2 Cor 10:3-5 -

Creates – Rom 4:17

Gives life – Prov 3:1

Lengthen your days and years – Prov 3:2

Medicine to your flesh – Prov 4:21-22

Ensures answers to prayer – John 15:7

The enemy fled after three times of Jesus saying “it is written,” so we might have to decree more than once.

I hope these are enough reasons to decree God’s words over your life and situation. In the Kingdom,  “on earth as it is in Heaven,” there are no problems, only solutions and there all found in God’s manual, the Bible.

Praying in Tongues - Praying in the Spirit

Another way to have effective prayers is to pray in the Spirit.

To speak in tongues:

Step one: You must have received God’s gift of salvation, the only way to have your sins forgiven to enter Heaven. (see my book Say Yes to Jesus)

Step 2: you must be baptized in the Holy Spirit.  Baptism by water is different, not the same thing.

Step 3: ask Holy Spirit to come and dwell in you with the evidence of speaking in tongues. (you may need to seek a training facility (“church”), that does not reject the Holy Spirit, that believes in being Spirit filled and manifesting all the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Benefits of praying in tongues:

"For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries" (1 Cor. 14:2, NKJV).

Holy Spirit wants to reveal mysteries to you about God, His will, your life and the circumstances you are facing. Tongues keeps us talking directly to God, praying in agreement with His perfect will (Rom. 8:26-28). Without getting distracted.

Praying in Tongues Empowers You to Engage Spiritual Warfare from the Position of Victory

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit" (Eph. 6:18).

Romans 8:26-27 (GW)

At the same time the Spirit also helps us in our weakness because we don't know how to pray for what we need. But the Spirit intercedes along with our groans that cannot be expressed in words. The one who searches our hearts knows what the Spirit has in mind. The Spirit intercedes for God's people the way God wants him to intercede.

Speaking in tongues release the supernatural into your natural.  It opens doors and gives you divine appointments. It’s a language that only God understands.  The enemy does not know what you are saying therefore he has trouble coming up against it.  It is the perfect prayer.  The devil hates it when we pray in tongues. That’s why he deceives so many not to speak it.

Lesson from God

Years ago during intercession with church leadership, I heard the Lord say:

Stop telling Me what do! I know more what to do than anyone!

Since then, I’ve been purposely listening to how I and others pray.  I noticed that many tell God what to do when they pray. We say things like God please heal this person. God open their eyes to see the truth. God bring this to them. God do this. God do that.

So if you start a prayer with God,..., you are probably going to tell Him what to do and how to do it.  Start noticing how you pray. Listen.

The best way is to let God tell you what to pray or how to pray. Do less talking and more listening.  Be led.  Let Him tell you what verses to decree or maybe He just wants you to speak in tongues.  Be led by Holy Spirit and use the authority He gave you to decree His words.

Another thing we need to realize when we pray is to Stop asking God for things He has already given you!

What did we get from the finished work of the cross?

Health or healing, wholeness, blessings, salvation, redemption, prosperity(success), peace, protection, fruit of the spirit, gifts of the spirit, the Word, Holy Spirit etc…

Don’t ask for healing, peace, blessings, protection, etc..

Instead what do we do? Decree that by Jesus’ strip you are healed!  Thank God for the peace that He already has given you. Thank Him for His protection and apply the spiritual blood of Jesus that protects over your family. You speak things that be not as though there were, Rom 4:17.  You speak to that mountain of sickness for example, and you tell it where to go, back to hell where it belongs!

Mark 11:22-25 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Jesus replied, “Have faith in God [constantly]. 23 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and[a]does not doubt in his heart [in God’s unlimited power], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will]. 24 For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer [in accordance with God’s will], believe [with confident trust] that you have received them, and they will be given to you. 25 Whenever you [b]stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him [drop the issue, let it go], so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions and wrongdoings [against Him and others].

If you could memorize any verses I would strongly memorize these 2: Rom 4:17 and Mark 22:25.  And get revelation on it.  It changed my world and the way I pray.

Now the last sentence of Mark 11:25 it says: “Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him [drop the issue, let it go], so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions and wrongdoings [against Him and others]”.

I believe, if you want effective prayers, prayers that bring results, you must release forgiveness, let Go and let God in your situations.  Say it out loud when you are by yourself; I forgive so and so, or I forgive myself for . . .

I’ll tell you something quick about forgiveness. If you don’t feel love and peace, toward a person or situation than you probably haven’t forgiven from your heart. They might have been just words. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that what they did is now acceptable. It means you no longer want to walk in bitterness, offense and unforgiveness because they hinder your authority in the spirit along with your walk with God. Unforgiveness opens the door for the enemy to attack you! Forgiveness is more about you and the health of your soul than the other person.
